Woman Wed Woman? No, It Can't Be Done!

Feb. 1920

But Two of 'Em Ask for Marriage License in Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas. — Two women came into the county clerk's office and asked for a marriage license to wed — each other — according to a local newspaper.

The astonished clerk announced that it couldn't be done, but the women protested.

"But we must," said one of them, "we can't get a room for any length of time. As soon as we find a home the landlord sells the room over our heads and I guess we will have to set up a family home for ourselves. So we thought it would be nice to get married."

"She'll be the husband," said the other, "and I'll promise to love and obey and let her, incidentally, furnish the living."

The county judge upheld the clerk's opinion that it couldn't be done, and the license was not issued.
