Check For Use of War Horse

Forest, April 21 - Mrs. Sarah Speidel received notice from the United States government today that she soon would receive a check for $14.60, due her late husband for the use of his horse during the civil war. Mr. Speidel enlisted with the Fifth Kansas cavalry and took one of his own horses with him when he went to the front. Mr. Speidel has been dead fifteen years. The widow did not know a claim had ever been presented to the government for the use of the animal. The account is dated 1864.
