Fired Several Volleys

New York, 1895

A Shooting Affair Which is Enshrouded With Mystery.

William Hicks, Harry Young and Lewis Moore of Riverhead, had an experience Friday night which they are likely to remember for some time. Hicks has a hundred or more shot in his body; Moore's wrist is marked, and the horse they were driving is wounded. They hired a rig of Nate Downs that evening and started for Eastport. They stopped at the house of Mrs. Chauncey Hallock, between Speonk and Eastport. The three were more or less intoxicated.

Hicks went to the front door and knocked. Mrs. Hallock went to the door and said:

"You are drunk. Get out of here."

She slammed the door in their faces. The trio became angry and created considerable disturbance around the premises. Mr. Hallock was nowhere visible. Some one of the three threw a bottle through the window. In a minute some one blew out the lights. Mrs. Hallock was next visible at the door. There were two reports of a fire arm. Hicks yelled with pain and Moore followed suit. The horse jumped and broke away. but the firing continued. Hicks received two charges of bird shot in his body, and Moore was also wounded.

Hicks says that at least eight guns were fired at them. The men do not know who fired the shots.
