Went Gunning After the Negro

New York, 1895

Monday evening Cornelius Walker, colored, recently employed by Louis Pearsall at Rockaway Beach, perpetrated an outrageous assault on the eight year old daughter of Herman Schemeclk, an oysterman residing at Hammil's station. Two of the girl's brothers and her father went in search of Walker with shot guns, and as the fact became known the entire village was aroused. Tuesday evening Walker was arrested in Jamaica by Constable Ashmead. Last October Walker committed an assault upon the eight year old daughter of James Johnson, of South street, Jamaica. He was arraigned before Justice Hendrickson yesterday and pleaded guilty and was held for the grand jury.
